"Data exceeds limit" when saving or publishing a product

What the 16 MB product data limit is, what counts toward it, and why image size is not the cause.

Description of the issue:

While working on a product in the builder, you see this warning:

Publishing failed. Data exceeds limit. Reduce data and retry.

Why is this happening?

Each product is stored as a single record with a maximum size of 16 MB. This limit applies to your product's configuration data: questions, answers, options, rules and pricing logic. A product with a very large number of questions and answers, or with highly detailed rules, can exceed it.

Images do not count toward this limit. Your images are stored separately and the product only keeps a link to each one, so a product with many large images uses almost none of the 16 MB. Compressing or removing images will not resolve this error.

How to fix it:

While our developers work on raising this limit, these steps help:

  • Reduce the number of questions and answers in your product.

  • Simplify rules and option logic, and remove any that are no longer used.

  • Split a very large product into several smaller ones.

If you are seeing a different error:

This article only applies to the warning above, with those exact words. Other messages are unrelated problems and this article will not help with them. In particular, if you see "... pricing has not been published" when saving prices, that is a separate issue: please contact our team at help@gokickflip.com.
