Applying theme updates

Try a new change to your theme and publish it when you're ready, before it's applied automatically.

We regularly improve how parts of your customizer look and work. When one of these changes affects your theme, it comes as a theme update. You get an opt-in period to try it, adjust your settings and publish it when you're ready.

At the end of the opt-in period, the update is applied to your live customizer automatically.

NOTE

Theme updates only show for accounts created before the update was released. If your account is newer, your customizer already has it.

Knowing when an update is available

We let you know at each stage of the opt-in period, on your Products page and in the Theme editor.

When

What you see

During the opt-in period

A Theme update popup on your Products page, with the date the update will be applied. A dot next to Theme editor in the left menu, and an Update available tag next to your theme's name.

21 days before the end date

An Action required banner on your Products page replaces the popup.

On the end date

The update is applied to your live customizer.

From the end date to 30 days after

A Customizer updated automatically banner on your Products page.

Once you've applied and published an update, these reminders stop.

Click on Go to Theme updates in the popup or banner to open the update directly.

Applying an update

  1. In the left menu, click on Theme editor. An Update available tag shows next to your theme's name.

  2. Click on the arrow next to your theme's name, then on Theme updates.

  3. Activate the update. Each update shows what changes, a Learn more link and the date its opt-in period ends.

  4. Click on Update theme.

  5. Check the preview. The sections affected by the update are marked Updated. Open them to adjust the new settings.

  6. Click on Publish.

IMPORTANT

Your changes won't go live until you publish.

Going back to the previous version

Until the end of the opt-in period, you can undo an update:

  1. Click on the arrow next to your theme's name, then on Theme updates.

  2. Deactivate the update, then click on Update theme.

  3. Click on Publish.

When the opt-in period ends

On the end date, the update is applied to your live customizer automatically, even if you deactivated it. Click on Go to Theme editor in the Customizer updated automatically banner to review the affected settings.

TIP

Apply the update before the end date, so you can check your customizer and adjust its settings at your own pace.
