File upload : switching to the new version

Learn what changes for your customers with the new file upload, and how to switch to it.

We've redesigned the file upload in your customizer. Your customers now pick their file from a clean window, where they can choose from your pre-set logos or from the files they've already uploaded.

If you're setting up a file upload question for the first time, please see our article: Allowing customers to upload an image and display it on your product.

IMPORTANT

The new file upload will be applied automatically to every customizer on December 8, 2026, at 12:00 AM UTC. Until then, you can switch to it whenever you're ready.

What it looks like for your customers

In the question panel, your customers see an Add file... button, with the allowed file formats and the maximum size underneath.

When they click Add file..., a Select a file window opens:

  • Add file from device uploads a new file. On a computer, customers can also drag and drop it.

  • Library lists your pre-set logos. This tab only appears if the question has pre-set logos.

  • Your recent uploads lists the files the customer has already uploaded, including files uploaded to another question.

Customers check a file, then click Select. A new upload is applied right away.

The selected file then appears as a card in the question panel, showing its name and size, and its print quality when your product has a print area. Customers can:

  • click Replace file... to pick another file

  • click the bin icon to remove a file they uploaded. Pre-set logos can't be removed.

On mobile

The Select a file window opens from the bottom of the screen and works the same way.

What's different from before

  • Pre-set logos and uploads are no longer displayed under the upload area. They're now in the Select a file window.

  • Customers confirm their choice with Select instead of clicking a thumbnail.

  • Customers can reuse a file they've already uploaded in another question.

  • The print quality is shown directly on the selected file.

  • The maximum file size is now displayed.

NOTE

Nothing changes in your file upload questions. Allowed file formats, the 100 MB limit, pricing and the way you retrieve uploaded files stay the same.

Switching to the new file upload in your account

The new file upload comes as a theme update. In the Theme editor, open Theme updates, activate File Upload, then publish your theme.

For the step-by-step, see our article: Applying theme updates.

Theme editor settings

With the new file upload, the File Upload section of the Theme editor changes:

  • Remove button style is replaced by Remove icon color, which sets the color of the bin icon.

  • The Add file... and Replace file... buttons use the colors set in Button style.

Switching back

Until December 8, 2026, at 12:00 AM UTC, you can go back to the previous file upload by deactivating File Upload in Theme updates. See Applying theme updates.
